Kelsey King with 2 Assist in First Game With Mavericks

Elk River Skills Development instructor Kelsey King recorded 2 assist in her first game with the Minnesota State Mavericks. The Mavericks took on Rensselaer (RPI) Friday night and fought their way to a 4-0 win kicking of their 2019-20 season. King, a freshmen, also had 4 shots on net and was +2 for the game. The Mavericks are right back at it today at 3pm.

Troy, N.Y. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team officially kicked-off the 2019-20 campaign with a 4-0 win in nonconference road action vs. Rensselaer Friday night at the Houston Field House.

The Mavericks got plenty help from some new faces on the team as two of the four goals scored came from newcomers and also two out of the seven assists. "The Mavericks had a great collective effort tonight, considering it was our first game of the year. Very committed to their own effort and supported their teammates" said head coach John Harrington, "Our first year players played with skill and confidence, contributing two goals and two assists."

Minnesota State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals by new freshmen in the first period of play. Freshman defenseman Charlotte Akervick scored her first collegiate goal and was the first Mavericks to score this season four minutes into the game. Junior forward Mariah Gardner and freshman winger Kelsey King received assists on the goal as Gardner gathered the rebound from King's saved shot and fed Akervick on the backside. Just under 10 minutes later, MSU extended its lead to 2-0 when freshman forward Kennedy Bobyck also scored her first collegiate goal. Bobyck gathered the sophomore winger Claire Butorac face-off win and flipped a wrister right under pipe from a bad angle in a four-on-four situation.

The Mavericks added another goal with 30 seconds remaining in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0. Gardner picked up the puck right outside the crease near the red line on the right ride and went top shelf for her first goal of the season. Sophomore forward Madison Oelkers and King were credited on the assists.

Minnesota State finished the shutout in the third period and added the final goal of the night six minutes into the period. Junior forward Brittyn Fleming grabbed a rebound from a senior captain Emily Antony saved shot and beat the Engineer netminder low glove side with sophomore blueliner Anna Wilgren receiving the second assist.

Sophomore netminder Abigail Levy (1-0-0) posted the shutout win and making 14 saves on the night. Rensselaer's netminder Amanda Rampado (0-1-0) finished with 40 saves on the night and allowed four goals.

The Mavericks, who outshot RPI by a 44-14 margin in the game, were zero-for-four in power play chances in the game. Rensselaer was unable to convert on its three chances with the man advantage.

Coach Harrington also said, "Our shot differential in the game showed what a good job we did in possessing the puck. Abigail had a rather quiet game, but did have a few outstanding saves among her 14 stops. We need to review this game, learn from it and get ready for our second game tomorrow,"

The Mavericks (1-0-0) and the Engineers (0-1-0) complete the two-game series Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. (EST) face-off scheduled at Houston Field House.
